Speed up your old laptop by swapping your HDD with an SSD - Fujitsu Lifebook UH572 example

How to speed up my old laptop?
This question pops up pretty often when you are sick of your laptop taking incredibly long to boot up and to do basically anything! Switching your HDD to an SSD would be your answer and here's how you do it. It is a pretty tedious process but trust me - it's totally worth it.

STEP 0: BACK IT UP.

Always back up the files you need in any case there is some form of corruption during the process.

Optional: Record how long it takes for your existing machine to boot up until the Windows screensaver, you can use it to compare later on.

STEP 1: Force Prep.

You will need:
1 x Internal 2.5" Solid State Drive ['SSD']
1 x USB-to-SATA cable ['U2S Cable' - not an actual term]
1 x Philips-head screwdriver  ['screwdriver']
1 x Beer - optional

STEP 2: Make sure they work

Connect the SSD to your laptop with the USB-to-SATA cable. Ensure that your laptop recognises the SSD. No formatting is required if your SSD is brand new.

STEP 3: Migrate EVERYTHING

Download Macrium which is the free software that we will be using to mirror your existing HDD into your SSD. Once installed, run the application. Select Migrate OS and copy the exact partitioning over to your SSD. Hit next until it starts running.

STEP 4: Check and confirm.

Not everything runs smoothly all the time. We need to understand that this is tech and not magic. Once completed, check the contents on your SSD. I would just check the size of the SSD whether it corresponds to my HDD since any missing files have already been backed up at STEP 0. Hence, if HDD = 121GB and SSD = 121GB, we are good to go!

STEP 5: Boot up from your SSD

Restart your machine. When your machine begins to power up again, look out for ‘Boot Menu’ option that appears before Windows even starts. You have only a small window to press for the boot menu. If you have missed it, restart your machine and try again. The button that calls for boot menu was F12 on my wife's Fujitsu Lifebook UH572.

STEP 6: Select your SSD as the drive to boot from using the navigation buttons as shown on your screen.

STEP 7: Let it boot up.

You can compare your boot up timings here from the optional point at Step 0 though i think it will not be as fast as after you switch the drives on your laptop.

STEP 8: You are almost there!
You do no have to worry about your Windows Operating System. Your Windows version should be activated as well on your SSD. Now it is confirmed that your SSD is all setup!

The next steps are pretty much changing your hardware which can be a little tricky depending on your machine.

STEP 9: Shutdown your machine and begin to inappropriately touch your laptop
!DISCLAIMER! : Some laptop manufacturers may void warranty if the laptop has been tempered with. If you are using an old laptop, I assume this should not matter.

Please note that this highly depends on which laptop you are using and this only applies to Windows machines.

STEP 10: Remove all power supply including the battery.

If your battery is in-built like mine, remove the battery at Step 12.

STEP 11: Remove the back panel of your laptop.

Note that it is not the entire back cover but just the smaller panel which is easily distinguished.

STEP 12: Remove the battery first before doing anything else and if you have not already done so at Step 3.

Be really careful here. The last thing you want is to screw up the cables and your laptop will not function unless you have a power supply plugged in.

STEP 13: Locate your HDD and remove it from the SATA head.

The SATA head looks the same as the U2S cable you procured for mirroring.

STEP 14: Migrate your mounts

Your HDD should come with a mount. Remove the mount with the screwdriver and set it up on your SSD. There is a right way of setting up the mount. Unlike me, use some common sense before screwing the mounts in.

STEP 15: Plug the SSD into the same slot as the HDD

Basically replacing it. Not too sure how you can screw things up at this point but WHO KNOWS!

STEP 16: Get everything back together.

The best way to ensure that nothing screws up, put everything together the same way you have taken them out. Tighten up the mounts, fix up your batteries and cover it all up with the panel.

STEP 17: ITTT'SSSSSSS TIME!!!!

Power your new baby up and witness the new speed. Oh, do not forget to give yourself a treat because you have done this all on your own!
