How to speed up my old laptop? This question pops up pretty often when you are sick of your laptop taking incredibly long to boot up and to do basically anything! Switching your HDD to an SSD would be your answer and here's how you do it. It is a pretty tedious process but trust me - it's totally worth it. STEP 0: BACK IT UP.  Always back up the files you need in any case there is some form of corruption during the process.   Optional: Record how long it takes for your existing machine to boot up until the Windows screensaver, you can use it to compare later on. STEP 1: Force Prep. You will need:  1 x Internal 2.5" Solid State Drive ['SSD'] 1 x USB-to-SATA cable ['U2S Cable' - not an actual term] 1 x Philips-head screwdriver  ['screwdriver'] 1 x Beer - optional STEP 2: Make sure they work Connect the SSD to your laptop with the USB-to-SATA cable. Ensure that your laptop recognises the SSD. No formatting is required
